1) DNR Show
During the DNR Live show on June 6 2017, titled “Rainy Romaine And The Sad Sea World Dance Party”
Romaine was describing her “family full of dummies” to Derek [timecode 38:30]. Eventually she gets to a story about a private party at SeaWorld that she attended with her brother John and sister Sabina [timecode 50:50]. Romaine reminisces angrily about a small group of 20 at the party who were surrounding a boom box, when a lame dance party with them broke out, in the rain. She goes on to describe how John decided to rip her poncho off her body which made her so damn angry. Finally [timecode 54:40] Romaine comments about how she was in a dark place after DNR lost their jobs, and she just wanted to have a good time at SeaWorld but her siblings made sure that didn’t happen. Romaine comments “they wouldn’t even let me go see Shmoo, or Shamu or whatever the fuck that whale’s name is.”
And therein lies the origins of the new catchphrase: #Shmoo
Sometimes incorrectly spelled: Schmoo

We have thousands of subscribers, with an extremely low churn rate. Very few people cancel.
There were a handful of people that got frustrated early on with tech issues, and especially in the first month before we had the easy downloads/streaming through the Podcast Apps.
Since our show has been available via Podcast Apps, during our first summer, we have been pretty error free around here and while it still takes convincing for people to try adding the show to the Podcast Apps, once they finally do, they love it.
The biggest reason people cancel is when they lose a job, but we do have gift subscriptions listeners have bought specifically for us to give to people who want to listen but can’t afford it, because we never want the money to be the barrier for people enjoying the show.
Obviously we need the money to stay in business, but there are ways to make it work if we all work together.
We did have three or four Trump supporters who weren’t happy and a couple did actually cancel after the election but I know of at least two that have come back into the fold since then! So no permanent damage there.
Derek and Romaine airs live on weekdays from 5-7pm ET/2-4pm PT.
The show airs on the DNR Live digital streaming channel 24/7. After the live two hour show airs on the DNR Live channel, it replays continuously for the next 22 hours until the next live show.
The DNR Live digital streaming channel can be found on the website by clicking the DNR Live link.
The DNR Live digital streaming channel will also appear in the Library > Shows > My Episodes section of the iOS11 Podcast App on the iPhone, after the show is added to iTunes using the Private URL included with your subscription. Find your Private URL by clicking the Account link on our website menu, then scrolling down to “Private URL for Podcast Apps”.
Logged in subscribers can always post here in The Center > Forums/Message Board or in the Derek and Romaine Group on Facebook. If you would like to hear your comments on the show, email firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line: Timeshifter and we will try to read your email on the air.
As our tag line states, “We’re not for everyone but we are for you!” And you can be whoever you are. We do have many straight listeners and allies! We want anyone who wants to listen to the show to feel welcome and encouraged to do so. DNR covers many topics that are often not even LGBT related, and anyone can identify with.

It’s really personal preference. If you want to be in Video Chat during the Live show, it’s easier to go to www.derekandromaine.com/listen and play the live show from the web page. It actually is played from our Streaming provider, so we are not paying website data charges for those playing through the website.
Also typically if you are playing through the website, you are probably at home or work with a consistent Internet connection.
If you are playing from the website and you are playing the Live show, but hearing an old show, then it’s time to Clear your Cache & Cookies.
If you are on a smartphone and traveling, you are best playing the Live show from a Podcast App.
We are working with our streaming company “StreamGuys” on building an Alexa skill that will allow you to hear our daily live shows – but this is not yet available and there is no ETA.
However a skill is currently available that will allow you to hear our live Special Programming shows including the Adam Sank Show (#ASS) and The Focus Group. In addition, you can hear special Derek and Romaine show favorites.
First, get our existing DNR Skill on Amazon
Once you’ve enabled the skill, say “Alexa, open DNR”, then follow the prompts from there.
You can also say “Alexa, tell DNR…”
- “To listen live.”
- “To play Derek and Romaine.”
- “To hear the Adam Sank Show.”
- “To hear the Focus Group”
For instructions on interacting with this skill, say “help.”
We have received good feedback about the ASS (Adam Sank Show) as well as Focus Group appearance and other guest hosts. And we are building toward additional Special Programming but delivered through a new brand. However, we are still working out exactly what we will run, how often, the length of episodes, etc. So short answer: we will be featuring more additional programming however, it may not be consistently delivered every week or even at the same time each week as we work through the best combinations. Still a work in progress.
2) DNR Website
The updated DNR Video Chat, uses a newer video encoder known as “h.264” which makes our video streams more efficient, and a newer audio codec known as “speex” which also makes audio more efficient. However these standards require more current versions of Adobe Flash.
By default, Adobe Flash typically is not installed in Safari, or it is not enabled. It may not even be the current version.
The symptom of the above, is you may just see a blank white screen when trying to enter DNR Video chat, such as below:
To get around these issues, follow these steps:
Then open Safari and go to https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/. Make sure you have the latest Flash installed. If not, download Flash. You must then close Safari and install Flash separately (check your Downloads folder).
After installing the latest Flash, open Safari again.
Then go to https://www.derekandromaine.com
Next, open Safari “Preferences”, then go to the “Security” tab. See below.
Make sure you UNCHECK “Block pop-up windows” (you need that for Video chat).
Next, click “Plug-in Settings”
Then on the Plug-ins screen, make sure you have “Adobe Flash Player” installed and enabled (see top left).
On the right side of that screen, make sure that Adobe Flash Player is allowed (“On”) for derekandromaine.com. See below.
After making these changes, close Safari and re-open. Then go back to https://www.derekandromaine.com/thecenter/chat and you should be able to get in.
These instructions were written based on Chrome Version 71. The steps should be similar for most versions, although they may not be exactly the same.
The current DNR Video Chat, requires a more current version of Adobe Flash, to be run on your computer/browser. The technical reasons for this need are – basically our new chat is using a newer video encoder known as “h.264” which makes our video streams more efficient, and a newer audio codec known as “speex” which also makes audio more efficient.
To get around these issues, follow these steps:
First, clear your browser’s Cache and Cookies:
Make sure you are clearing “For All Time” on both the Basic tab:
And the Advanced Tab:
Next, go to https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/. Make sure you have the latest Flash installed. If not, download Flash. You must then close Chrome and install Flash separately (check your Downloads folder).
After installing the latest Flash, open Chrome again and go back to the Chat window you were on, either on https://www.derekandromaine.com/thecenter/chat or https://www.dnrstudios.com/play/chat and re-open the desktop chat pop-up.
Next, click the “Lock” symbol on the top left
This will open the settings menu
Next, click the drop-down to the following options, especially “Flash” and make sure they are set to “Allow”:
If prompted, click “Reload” to reload the page:
After all of the above, you should be able to view the Chat pop-up window.
For iPhone users, your phone already has the Podcasts app loaded on your phone and you can listen to the show there by following the instructions below. For Android users, you can download a free app like Podcast Addict. Most people can add the show to one of these podcast apps with a single click by following these instructions. Once you do, you will be able to listen to the live stream of the show (available 24/7 on a loop) and also the last 30 days worth of downloads from the archive. Additional older shows are available for download through our website only.
Here’s how you add the show to your favorite podcast app:
- Visit the website at https://www.derekandromaine.com, ON YOUR SMARTPHONE.
- Click on the Account link from the Main Menu and scroll down to the Member Links section on your Account page. You will see a link that says Private URL for Podcast Apps at the bottom. Simply click on that and the show will be added to the Podcasts app on your iPhone or Podcast Addict on Android.
- Open your podcast app and you should see the Derek and Romaine show listed as one of the shows available there. Click on the show in your podcast app and you will see the most recent shows ready to download and listen.
- To listen to the live show, look for the show labeled DNR Live Streaming Show. For Android, it may be at the top of the list of Derek and Romaine episodes in the Podcast Addict app. For iPhone users, open the show in the Podcasts app, then scroll to the bottom of My Episodes then click the link that says Available Episodes. You should see the DNR Live Streaming Show there at the top.
- If your vehicle has a newer car stereo that allows connections with your smartphone, you should be able to stream the live show or play any downloaded show in your app through your existing car stereo.
We do have a Listener/Member Directory at https://www.derekandromaine.com/thecenter/memberdirectory. You must be a subscriber and logged in, to view it.
To find people in your local area, we recommend searching by the two-digit state codes (ie: NJ for New Jersey) rather than trying to search by city, as there are thousands of cities and the Member Directory does not have a search by zip code proximity.
Another tip, you can search by a cruise name (ie: “Miami Madness”) to try and find fellow cruisers. However this is dependent on members actually putting their cruise name, in their User Profile. Members can edit their User Profile by clicking the menu options for: The Center > My Bio/Profile.
The current Video Chat system utilizes software from a company that is no longer actively developing the chat software. So with our current Video Chat software, no.
Regardless, the current Video Chat system uses Adobe Flash, to produce the Video Streams. However Adobe Flash will no longer be supported or enhanced by Adobe, after the end of 2020.
Darren has looking for a potential replacement, and will be testing the new chat software in late 2018. If you would like to be part of this beta test, please contact Darren and let him know.
When you visit websites, copies of the web pages are “cached”, or saved, to your local computer. Then the next time you visit the same web page, the cached page is usually displayed, instead of retrieving the page from the website again. This is done for speed. However, when our website changes, especially when changes to navigation or functionality are made, you may not be looking at current content and features from our website. And sometimes it may seem like the website isn’t working correctly as a result.
When the above happens, or simply on a regular basis, it’s good to clear your web browser cache and cookies.
For steps on how to do this, see: https://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Cache-and-Cookies
Your credit card number and details used to purchase memberships, gifts and DNR Shop items online, are not saved on our website. They are captured with a secure connection during the payment and processing and storage of the card info is actually done through our credit card processor, Stripe. Rest assured, Stripe has passed the most stringent level of certification available in the payments industry.
First login, then click “Account” then scroll down till you see the “Edit Profile” link next to Change Password. Click the Edit Profile. Scroll down to the Avatar section. You can either upload your own Avatar to DNR, or use Gravatar. If you use Gravatar, you need to have the same email registered with both DNR and the Gravatar site, and then the avatar image will display on DNR’s site.
3) Podcast Apps
Here’s how you add the show to your favorite podcast app:
- Visit the website at https://www.derekandromaine.com, ON YOUR SMARTPHONE.
Depending on your exact smartphone brand (Android, iPhone, etc) – and the version and configuration of your Podcast App – your Podcast App may be configured to delete shows from your list of Episodes, that you have listened to. Thus if you play the DNR LIVE STREAMING SHOW to the end, it may disappear from your list of Episodes. Regardless, you should still be able to find it by listing all Available Episodes.
For the iOS 11 Podcast App, find the DNR LIVE STREAMING SHOW, and click the three dots (…) next to the Episode. The next screen should have a “Settings” menu option; click it. Then under Episodes, click “Custom Settings”. Next to “Delete Played Episodes”, make sure that is turned OFF.
Android’s Podcast Addict has similar settings to NOT do an auto cleanup where it deletes the episode once you finish listening.
Just note that after making these changes, you will have to manually delete the other played Episodes when you are done listening to them, or they may take up room in your Podcast App.
It’s important to understand, that the iOS Podcast App and Android’s Podcast Addict, do not officially provide any support for categorizing and playing a “Live” show. So when we launched DNR 2.0, we attempted to trick your Podcast Apps to list the DNR LIVE STREAMING SHOW Episode first, by putting a Publish Date on it, of the last day of the year. That used to work fine, until iOS 11 came out with a new Podcast App and that didn’t quite function the same.
After the LIVE STREAMING SHOW ends at 7pm eastern time, if you are listening to the show via the iOS 11 Podcast app or Android’s Podcast Addict, you will hear the next Episode in your list of Episodes (yesterday’s show, etc).
However if you click back to the DNR LIVE STREAMING SHOW Episode, what was previously live from 5pm to 7pm Eastern, is simply repeated on the DNR LIVE STREAMING SHOW Episode, so you can always start from the beginning if you missed part of the show.
For Android devices, we hear the best feedback about Podcast Addict.
For iOS, many have tried various Apps but they typically come back to the built-in Podcast App for iOS. It seems to be the most stable App.
However it’s difficult to find the DNR Live Streaming Show in the iOS 11 Podcast App. The quickest way: Go to the bottom of the App, click Library, choose DNR 2.0, scroll all the way to the bottom of the feed and then choose “Available Episodes” and then “DNR LIVE STREAMING SHOW” should be at the top! Unfortunately you may have to repeat these steps the next time you open the app.
Because new subscribers were automatically downloading 700+ hours of data, and it was costing us a fortune, we made a change to the Podcast feed in 2017, where it will only load the past 30 days worth of shows. The full archive is available on the web in the Audio Archive section where you can download the individual shows that you want to hear.
The quickest solution, go to the bottom of the app, then go to library, choose DNR 2.0, scroll all the way to the bottom of the feed and then choose “Available Episodes” and then “DNR LIVE STREAMING SHOW” should be at the top! Unfortunately you may have to repeat these steps the next time you open the app.
Unfortunately the iOS Podcast App and Android’s Podcast Addict, do not officially provide any support for categorizing and playing a “Live” show. So we have to work around these issues.
Depending on your exact smartphone brand (Android, iPhone, etc) – and the version and configuration of your Podcast App – your Podcast App may also be configured to delete shows from your list of Episodes, that you have listened to. 4) DNR Cruise
Some of our FAQ questions have developed into small conversations, so we have moved them to our DNR Cruise FAQ section in our Forums/Message Boards. You must be a logged in user to post!
The core questions, with links to the appropriate DNR Cruise FAQ topics, are posted below:
5) DNR Studio
If you want to visit the Studio, you can email Katie at email@example.com to check to see if there is space available on the date you want to visit and if the show will be live that day. She will also email you the location, guidelines for the visit and helpful tips as well.
There are a few things to keep in mind when visiting the studio as we have had a lot of visitors since 2.0 we had to come up with some studio visit guidelines. They are outlined below.
- Space is limited- Our studio is very small so please don’t bring extra people unless we know about them ahead of time.
- In studio Guests- If there is an in-studio guest for the show on the date of your visit we may need you to leave before the guest arrives (usually around 5:45). Primarily because space is limited and often guests bring their publicists.
- Arrive a little before 5pm if you want to talk with DNR and take pics. Once the show starts we don’t take breaks so it is hard to do those things. Also, Derek needs to run out as soon as the show ends to catch his train home so there isn’t time then.
- Please turn off/silence cell phones while in studio.
- Please let us know before the show starts how long you plan on staying. If you have to leave before the show ends that way it doesn’t catch us off guard. Also, if we want to bring you on air with us it helps to know how long we have you.
- Last but not least, we are happy to have you visit and we hope you have a good time.
